Finding Joy in the Chaos.

Sometimes life is quite simply overwhelming.

Overwhelming for your children and overwhelming for you too! YES it's OK for adults to feel overwhelmed.

I have come to an understanding now of just allowing things to BE. To not try to control them too much, because actually surrendering to the chaos and just KNOWING that life is overwhelming and sometimes we need to be able to express that.

The one thing about adults is that a lot of the time they hold their emotions in whereas children express perfectly what they are feeling. They may have a tantrum in the middle of Tescos and 2 minutes later it's like it never happened. Never be embarrassed or make them feel ashamed for expressing their emotions. Emotions are incredibly powerful, they are making good use of them. They understand they are frustrated, they know it needs to come out. As long as it's not directly hurting anyone then I really do think it's a good thing.

Showing understanding of the way that we react is really important.

Sometimes that may come in the form of something else. It may seem like they are showing off, shouting and screaming, clingy or anxious, often it's not a case of "naughty" as some people call it, It's called OVERWHELM. Children need help with being able to get through these emotions and a lot of the time it's hard to do so as adults when we haven't worked it out or regulated it ourselves. Having an understanding is the most important.

How WE react to situations says a  lot about who we are as adults.

Sometimes a great big ol hug after a difficult moment is all they need and us as adults, we need hugs too.

Surrendering to the chaos has 2 forms for me. I do it at home with an understanding that life is not perfect. 2 I document honest life. It's important. Honest photographs about real family life are important for the world and most importantly their stories are important for future generations.

Every person on this planet deserves to be hugged. We often need a hug the most during the struggle (which is when as adults we often feel we don't deserve it - that is when we need it the most!)
