Baby boy being breastfed

The Beautiful Breastfeeding Project

A Personal Project

Back in 2014 when I became a mother I wasn't sure if I was going to breastfeed or not. I didn't really know much about it and was one of the first of my friends to have a baby so I hadn't really seen it or spoken about it with anyone at length. When George was born I immediately had the urge to breastfeed him, I guess you would call that " instinct" Although I did struggle to get him to latch and did struggle for several weeks before it felt natural for both of us. What came over me through the struggle was the urge to succeed and do this because that was what my body was telling me to do. I was very grateful to receive great support in online groups for all of the questions I had but initially, the midwife-led unit was my first contact with help which was well needed at that time before being home and not having help with the latching. I spoke to many women at various groups I attended with George over the early days and listened to many women talk about birth and breastfeeding and was really sad to hear on several occasions that lack of support that they felt they had not recevied. If a mother has made a choice that she wants to breastfeed her baby then I feel she should have the support she needs.

My passion to start this project began at that moment and so I decided I wanted to capture women's breastfeeding stories with my camera in a documentary approach. I would like to have an exhibition at some point in the future and also a book. My aim firstly is to build more awareness of breastfeeding and also to help women and the public be more aware of the struggles that are going on. I know many women feel they cannot do it along and need constant support in those early days. I want to build more awareness of local volunteer peer supporters who offer their time to help in online groups and also weekly meetups for women to attend to meet other mums and receive support.

I am so excited to work on this project and have met some truly inspiring and amazing women on the journey so far.

This is an ongoing project and I set dates and areas out for my year. If you are interested in being part of the project you can get in touch to share your story.
